Uganda is an undiscovered, unspoilt, wildlife paradise. A place of charming diversity. It will surprise you, and you will be smitten.
Uganda is blessed more than any other nation with the variety of observable birdlife. It is truly a birder’s paradise. Uganda‘s unique position as a crossover zone between the East African savannah, West African rainforest and northern semi - desert, together with large bodies of water and swamp, all help to create a mind boggling bird list. Over 1000 species have been recorded in Uganda. From the extraordinary ostrich and the elusive and rare shoebill stork, to a selection of kingfisher and rainforest specials. In the papyrus swamps that surround Lake Victoria and other lakes, the shy and enigmatic Shoebill can be found, as well as other rare breeds including Papyrus Yellow and White-winged Warblers, Carruther's Cisticola, Papyrus Gonolek, Swamp Flycatcher and Orange Weaver. It is reckoned that in a two week stay one could record sightings of between 400 - 500 species.
Uganda has a display of wildlife the
envy of many of it’s neighbours. From Lion to Giraffe and Elephant to
Hippo, many of the world’s most exotic wildlife can be found in this
beautiful landscape. 50% of the entire world’s mountain gorilla
population is found in Bwindi Forest National Park in the South of the
country Primates of all kinds are to be found in many wooded areas. 13
species of primate including the black and white colobus, the threatened
red colobus, blue monkey and grey – checkered mangabey, bush babies
and pottos. Uganda has animals that you would expect from a sub-saharan
African nation, as well as some surprising species too.
This is a wildlife enthusiasts dream
and one that the Ugandan authorities want to enhance and improve
wherever possible. They are currently involved in preservation and
re-establishment of the endangered White Rhino. The program is preparing
to release the species back into the wild. A sight not possible since
the white Rhino’s extinction from Uganda in 1956.
